Puradelta Builds Data Center Area

The domestic information technology (IT) business ecosystem is currently busy with the booming trend of data center development in recent times. For example, domestic tycoons such as the Salim Group, Lippo Group, and also Telkom as long-standing players in the national IT industry, are seen aggressively expanding their business wings in this new market niche. Not wanting to be left behind, the developers of the country seem to want to participate in making money through the provision of land for the development of the area which also requires a large area. “The data center business is indeed quite prospective lately, with digital technology stretching that is indeed getting faster. Also, driven by government policies that require (data center) related to data belonging to Indonesia, must be built in Indonesia. So (data center business) is also interesting for us," Director and Corporate Secretary of PT Puradelta Lestari Tbk, Tondy Suwanto, in Public Expose Live 2021 organized by the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX), Thursday (9/9).

For information, PT Puradelta Lestari Tbk is one of the property developers under the Sinarmas Group which owns several existing lands in several areas in Indonesia, including the special area of Kota Deltamas, Cikarang, which is the backbone of its business. Regarding the plan to enter the data center development business, Tondy stated that at least 12 data center companies are ready to be present in his area, in Kota Deltamas, Cikarang. Later this special area is claimed by Tondy to have a fiber-optic network and be connected to an internet service provider. "We have also formed an agreement with PLN to provide electricity up to 993 megavolts, specifically for the Deltamas area. This electricity supply is very important because the data center requires a very large electricity supply,” said Tondy.

Meanwhile, for infrastructure development, according to Tondy, his party has provided funds of up to Rp. 200 billion taken from the company's capital expenditure (CAPEX) allocation this year. Some of these infrastructure development projects have even begun to be carried out, in the form of construction according to the orders of incoming clients. "From the CAPEX budget of Rp800 billion to Rp850 billion this year, around Rp150 billion to Rp200 billion of which is for this infrastructure (data center area). More than 12 companies, both domestic and global, are ready to attend. Some have even started construction in Deltamas, while others are still negotiating,” said Tondy

Global Company that Builds Data Center in Indonesia?

For offices, digital transformation has become quite a viral jargon and has begun to be applied by companies that were initially still loyal to the offline system. Businesses today rely heavily on technology to keep the wheels turning. As a result, the use of cloud services jumped sharply in the first quarter of 2020.

One report even mentions every single person generates about 1.7 MB of information every second. The high rate of growth in this data information ultimately requires a secure facility to store data. The solution is the data center. A data center is a special room or place in a building or several buildings that are used to accommodate computing resources and other interrelated components.

Indonesia has been in the spotlight of technology giants as a data center development area. Then, who has built the data center in the country?

Alibaba Cloud

Alibaba Cloud or also known as Aliyun officially built a data center in Indonesia in 2018. With around 2.3 million users in the world, this data center from China is the only global cloud service provider from Asia.

The range of products offered includes big data, elastic computing, database services, security, networks, and middleware for analysis.

To date, Alibaba Cloud already has two data centers in Indonesia and plans to build a third data center in early 2021.

Google Cloud

Jakarta is the location chosen by Google to build its data center. It was officially opened in 2020 and made Jakarta the second data center location after Singapore in Southeast Asia.

The standard Google services provided include Compute Engine, Google Kubernetes Engine, Cloud SQL, Cloud Storage, Cloud Spanner, Cloud Bigtable, and BigQuery.

By entering Jakarta, Google Cloud practically now has 24 regions and 73 zones in 17 countries around the world.

Amazon Web Services (AWS)

An investment of 40 trillion was disbursed to build a data center in Indonesia. West Java became the first location chosen by AWS. The plan is to build 3 data centers in separate locations in the country.

Regional Managing Director, Public Sector, AmazonWeb Services Peter Moore explains AWS manages and owns the entire infrastructure in the three zones. Previously, AWS had built an office in Jakarta in 2018.

With the construction of an AWS data center in the country, it is hoped that users can take advantage of low latency, connectivity, and a wider range of local products available.

NTT Communications

This Japanese telecommunications company is building a data center in Cikarang which will open in early 2021. This data center is named Jakarta3 DC which is claimed to be able to accommodate up to 18,000 square meters of IT space and contain up to 45 MW of IT.

Jakarta3 DC is one of the largest data centers in Indonesia that offers hybrid services that are not only connected to a closed network/private cloud service but also connected to public cloud services.

Another location called Jakarta2 DC is also available in Indonesia.

Microsoft Azure

Not wanting to be left behind, Microsoft also gave a signal of interest is starting to build a data center in Indonesia. This was welcomed by the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Jokowi.

Some of the services offered by Microsoft Azure include Storage & Databases, Networking, Big Data, Cloud AI, Management Tools, Identity & Security, IoT, Platform APIs, and many more. Azure users can engage users to build Mobile apps, responsive web, new generation experiences like bots.

Not yet started exactly when or where the location was chosen by Microsoft to open its first database.
