Microsoft has released the Surface Laptop SE, which costs IDR 3 million.
Microsoft has just announced the Windows 11 SE operating system (OS), a new version of Windows 11 that was released last October. Not only the OS, the software giant also introduced a new gadget, namely the Surface Laptop SE, which was immediately equipped with the Windows 11 SE OS. Similar to Chromebooks that run the ChromeOS operating system, the Surface Laptop SE is also targeted at the education segment, including teachers, students, and school IT admins at the elementary to junior high school education levels. According to the Windows blog, "We hear from educators that they need an option that's simpler, safer, and can support cheaper devices," said Paige Johnson, Microsoft's vice president of education marketing. Only the body is made of plastic. The Surface Laptop SE has an 11.6-inch diagonal screen with a resolution of 1,366 x 768. The screen has an aspect ratio of 16:9. This is the first Surface laptop to have this aspect ratio, after more than seven years of Surface laptops using a 3:2 aspect ratio. The device is powered by an Intel Celeron N4020 or N4120 processor combined with 4GB or 8GB of RAM and 64GB of eMMC storage, or 128 GB. On the front side is a 1-megapixel camera with 720p resolution. This laptop has several ports, including USB-A, USB-C, and DC connector barrels, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. As summarized by KompasTekno from The Verge on Wednesday (11/10/2021), Microsoft promises major improvements to the Surface Laptop SE. So, teachers and students can request the replacement of components in the laptop. The Surface Laptop SE has standard bolts, so IT admins can replace the screen, battery, keyboard, and even the motherboard. Reportedly, Microsoft has spent 18 months discussing with IT admins the difficulties of managing school laptops. According to Microsoft, ease of repair is one of the main things.
Microsoft will sell Surface Laptop SE parts through authorized service providers. So, the school can replace the components on the spot without having to send the device out for service. The Surface Laptop SE starts at $249, or around IDR 3.5 million for the 4GB RAM and 64GB memory model. The higher model, which has an 8GB/128GB RAM memory configuration, is priced at US $329 (around Rp. 4.6 million). The plan is that Microsoft will release this laptop in early 2022 in several countries, namely the UK, the United States, and Japan. Several other laptop vendors are said to be ready to use Windows 11 SE. They are Acer, Asus, Dell, Dynabook, Fujitsu, HP, JK-IP, Lenovo, and Positivo, which are powered by Intel and AMD processors.
